» A Slice of Japan Arrives in Sinsheim

Tokyo may be thousands of kilometres away, but visitors to Technik Museum Sinsheim will soon feel as though they have stepped straight into the heart of Japan. Beginning on 24 October 2026, the museum’s new special exhibition, The Spirit of Nippon, will bring together cherry blossoms, neon-lit streetscapes and some of Japan’s most celebrated vehicles in an immersive experience dedicated to the nation’s unique automotive culture.

Occupying more than 3,000 square metres in Hall 3, the exhibition will run until 10 September 2028 and explore the close connections between tuning, motorsport, design and pop culture. Included in the regular museum admission, the exhibition aims to offer visitors a comprehensive look at the passion, creativity and innovation that have made Japanese car culture a global phenomenon.

Automotive Legends in Constant Motion

At any given time, around 30 carefully selected vehicles will be on display, representing different aspects of Japan’s motoring heritage and contemporary scene. Among the highlights are iconic models such as the Nissan Skyline R34 GT-R, the rotary-powered Mazda RX-7 and a historic McLaren-Honda racing car.

Off-road enthusiasts will also find plenty to admire, with cult favourites such as the Suzuki Samurai and Suzuki Jimny included in the line-up.

What sets The Spirit of Nippon apart is its ever-changing character. Throughout the exhibition’s nearly two-year run, vehicles will be rotated regularly, ensuring that no two visits are exactly the same. As one exhibit leaves the hall, another arrives, creating fresh experiences for returning guests.

Exploring the Streets of Japan

The exhibition begins beneath a traditional torii gate surrounded by cherry blossom trees, setting the tone for a journey through four thematic areas: Classics, JDM & Tuning, Motorsport and Off-Road.

Drawing inspiration from Japan’s urban street culture and vibrant nightlife, the exhibition recreates the atmosphere of a spontaneous car meet. Vehicles are displayed in dynamic groupings, while a specially designed interpretation of Tokyo Tower serves as a striking centrepiece within the hall.

The experience extends beyond automobiles. Display cases featuring retro gaming consoles, Walkmans and other nostalgic objects highlight the broader cultural context in which Japanese automotive enthusiasm thrives, illustrating how closely connected technology, entertainment and lifestyle have become.

More Than an Exhibition

Designed as both an exhibition and a social space, The Spirit of Nippon encourages visitors to engage with the culture as well as the vehicles. Dedicated photo spots throughout the exhibition offer opportunities to capture memorable moments, while younger visitors can enjoy specially designed attractions, including a slide.

According to Tobias Sohns, Exhibition Director of Technik Museen Sinsheim Speyer, the exhibition reflects a cultural trend that continues to influence younger generations.

“Japan has a unique way of bringing technology, pop culture and lifestyle together. For younger generations in particular, tuning, gaming and lifestyle are naturally interconnected. It is precisely this interaction that we want to showcase in the exhibition.”

In keeping with the museum’s motto, “For Fans, by Fans,” the exhibition will also serve as a gathering place for enthusiasts. A programme of community events, meetings and themed activities is planned throughout its duration, providing opportunities for visitors to share their passion and connect with like-minded fans.
