gamescom: gamescom goes green: Successful start to a greener future
» The first successful steps in this direction were taken this year with the support of ClimatePartner: The core event and all the areas that Koelnmesse and the game association are responsible for (fair grounds infrastructure, theme areas, shows, staff, mobility, etc.) were climate-friendly. Nearly 3,000 tons of the CO2 emissions generated were offset by the support of two certified climate protection projects.
Exhibitors could also participate voluntarily in the climate protection projects and reduce their carbon footprint. Many companies took part in this initiative, including astragon Entertainment, Bandai Namco Entertainment, Black Forest Games, devcom, McDonald’s Deutschland, Mediencluster NRW, Microsoft/Xbox, PLAION, Rocket Beans Entertainment, Indie Arena Booth, TikTok, and Western Digital. Other exhibitors implemented their own concepts to make their presence carbon-neutral.
Another highlight was the partnership with Playing for the Planet, a United Nations (UN) initiative. Thanks to this cooperation, the gamescom goes green award was presented for the first time. Visitors also had the opportunity to participate in gamescom goes green by purchasing a green ticket or making a donation online. The proceeds went to the gamescom forest in the vicinity of Bayreuth. Thanks to the commitment of the community together with a donation of EUR 10,000 from McDonald’s Deutschland, an area of around 4,300 square meters could be replanted, bringing the gamescom forest to a total of 22,600 square meters this year. devcom, the conference for game developers which takes place during gamescom week, also participated in gamescom goes green and was completely climate-neutral for the first time.
“gamescom goes green was a very good start to a far more sustainable event and I am proud that we are pioneers in the area of major events as well as gaming events worldwide. One of the main strengths of the concept lies in the joint commitment of everyone involved: us as organisers, the participating companies and the community. This clearly shows that only together can we stop climate change and protect the environment. Nevertheless, we still have a long way to go. The experiences of this year will also help us to develop gamescom’s sustainability strategy further in the future,” says Felix Falk, Managing Director of game – The German Games Industry Association.
“We at Koelnmesse have been strongly committed to the issue of sustainability for several years already and were one of the first trade fair companies in Germany to join the Net Zero Carbon Events initiative of the global trade fair industry. With the gamescom goes green project, we have once again taken gamescom a step further and achieved quite a remarkable result. We will continue to build on this both at gamescom as well as other Koelnmesse events,” says Oliver Frese, Chief Operating Officer at Koelnmesse.
